Janusz Bugajski – amerykański politolog, ekspert „The Jamestown Foundation” w Waszyngtonie. W swojej książce pt. „Failed state. A guide to Russia’s repture” (2022), która została wydana w polskiej wersji językowej przez Studium Europy Wschodniej UW („Państwo upadłe. Droga do rozpadu Rosji”, 2024), opisuje symptomy rozpadu Federacji Rosyjskiej. Janusz Bugajski jest autorem 22 książek o Europie, Rosji i stosunków transatlantyckich, prowadził długoletnie programy telewizyjne na Bałkanach. Jest stałym felietonistą kilku mediów w USA i Europie.

Autora, znakomitego analityka, nie trzeba w tym miejscu przedstawiać. Podobnie nie wymaga rekomendacji temat książki. Trudno w pewnym sensie o książkę bardziej na czasie. Ale czy Rosja jest już państwem upadłym? Czy pominąć zdolności imperium Putina do wykorzystywania nie tyle własnej siły, ale słabości przeciwników? A dla Rosji przeciwnikiem są wszyscy, ale zwłaszcza tzw. Zachód, mocno podzielony wewnętrznie. Autor sam pisał o tym niezwykle wnikliwie i kompetentnie, w swych wcześniejszych monografiach. Obawiam się, że przywiązanie znacznej części establishmentu dyplomatycznego, politycznego i medialnego w USA i kluczowych krajach Europy Zachodniej do wizji „wielkiej Rosji”, z którą współpraca jest gwarancją ładu światowego – jest i pozostanie w dającej się wyobrazić przyszłości potężnym instrumentem wsparcia dla neoimperialnej Rosji.

Janusz Bugajski is an American political scientist and an expert at 'The Jamestown Foundation’ in Washington DC. In his book entitled. „Failed state. A guide to Russia’s repture’ (2022), which was published in Polish by the Centre for East European Studies University of Warsaw („Państwo upadłe. Droga do rozpadu Rosji”, 2024), he describes the symptoms of the collapse of the Russian Federation. Janusz Bugajski is the author of 22 books on Europe, Russia and transatlantic relations and has hosted long-running television programmes on the Balkans. He is a regular columnist for several media outlets in the USA and Europe.

Review by Daniel Fried, U.S. Ambassador to Poland (1997-2000) employee at the U.S. Consulate General in Leningrad (1980-1981) visiting professor at the Centre for East European Studies UW: In 1970, an essay with the arresting title „Will the Soviet Union Survive until 1984” appeared in the West, the work of a then little-known Soviet dissident, Andrei Amalrik. Amalrik predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union under the weight of internal decay, national antagonisms, and a failed war. Soviet scholars in the West regarded the book as an amusing curiosity, to be read but not to be taken seriously. More than 50 years later, Bugajski’s analysis of Russian weakness reminds us that while the challenges Europe and the U.S. face are serious, Russia’s are worse. Bugajski has given us an important book and a timely one that runs against a trend of strategic pessimism in the West. Writing mostly before Russia’s full-on invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Bugajski analyzes Russian internal weakness and systemic decay, both political and economic; outlines in admirable detail centrifugal forces within the Russian Federation; sketches out potential scenarios for Russian collapse; and attempts to unpack international implications for Russia’s neighbors, Europe, and United States
